I was so much older then. . .

Mike told me a couple of weeks ago that I've aged.  Apparently, he was looking back through old photos and found this shot of us at the Sliding Rock in the Pisgah National Forest.  We'd been married less than two months and were working part-time then.  The day before, or so, we'd slid down the big rock face into the icy cold water.  I was the chicken who'd worn a life jacket and nearly hyperventilated on the way down.  We were surrounded by kids who'd made dozens of trips down the rock and were pumped for more.  Once was enough for me.

Three years later, I admittedly look a little different.  I'm a whole quarter of a century old, have one day of work left, and will be holding a baby in less than four months.  I still manage to make funny faces when my picture is taken because my being photogenic wore off at the age of ten.  Really, I was great until then.

Twenty-four was a big year of preparation.  Twenty-five will be settling in.  I'll have three-ish months to get used to one income before the baby comes.  There will be a final summer of just being Mike-and-Brandy.  There is a freezer to stock and berries to pick.  There will be firsts like crazy and I will be here to see them all.  Lucky me. :-)

Now that I'm back from the break, I'll participate in [info]helenkosings meme, Six Quirky Things:
  1. I cannot sleep late, no matter what.  I might miss something.  Like breakfast.
  2. I cannot lie when it's the polite thing to do.  It just doesn't work.  Social graces seem to have escaped me.  So, I guess you know that if I say thank-you, I really do mean it.  Otherwise, the foot goes into the mouth.
  3. I won my best friend Becky by annoying her until she gave up and liked me.  Isn't stealing pieces of a person's flute in band at least slightly endearing?
  4. Cereal is my favorite pre-packaged food genre.  I can eat cereal until the cows come home, laugh at me for awhile and go back out to pasture.  Good thing I found Tammy's granola recipes.  I talk about them rather a lot, if you haven't noticed.  They'll likely save our budget in the coming months.
  5. My husband loves Dave Matthews Band like I love cereal and I do not.  Life's funny like that.
  6. For the first time in my life, I have no plans beyond December.  A month of back and forth, hemming and hawing, up and down, waiting and waiting, I've learned a lot about flexibility and zero expectations.  Probably a good thing, considering.
Now it's time to inaugurate a new year with a hot bowl of Cream of Wheat with maple syrup.  Happy Birthday to me!

Foamhenge 2007
Saturday, Mark and Anna and Mike and I headed to the Other Virginia to seek The Foam.  It was really quite profound.  When we got there, we parked and walked up a dusty trail to the top of the hill where the mystical styrofoam artform sat.

The grass was littered with bits of styrofoam, as if someone had opened a gigantic package from the UPS man.  There were several detailed signs (made of foam and fiberglass) which told how The Henge was made.  The slabs weigh 420 pounds each and were made of materials donated from local insulation companies.  :-P

It was part history, part conspiracy theory.  The artist's signs told of ancient peoples sliding the stone slabs on logs and using levers to lift them into position.  He also offered an alternative theory--that Merlin the Wizard made the slabs levitate into position.  The peculiar part, if you click to look closer (really requires two clicks for clarity), is that Merlin's face was cast from a friend of the artist--after his death!  Come to think of it, Merlin's eyes are closed. . .

And just in case you were thinking of taking some of the foam home to pack up Christmas gifts for shipping--heed the warning.  I will say we combed the woods pretty thoroughly and didn't find Mr. Cline lurking anywhere. . .

We sat in the shadow of The Henge for our lunch of homemade goodies--butternut squash soup with real bacon bits and sour cream, Mike's yummy bread, my quick strawberry cream cheese, pomegranates for peace and sharp cheddar cheese.  There were brownies for dessert.  The wind was quite stout while we ate, but it was very enjoyable.

It was a super-fun day.  We stopped in Roanoke on the way back (which is the boundary between the two Virginias)  and visited the downtown.  The farmers' market was packing up, but Mike and I managed to get some handmade taper candles and a special pottery gift for my Secret Santa pal.  We stopped at our favorite candy store and bought almost $20 of chocolates and gummies (I love gummies).  What can I say?  We don't get out much.

Since it was around supper time, we walked the streets looking for a place to eat.  Mike treated us all to Tong Thai (remember that name and go there as quickly as you can!!) and it was amazing.  Best Pad Thai I've ever had.  Mark (and the rest of us moochers) loved his dish, Lad Na, in particular.  The owner, in particular, loved Mark and even gave him curry and the phone number of a woman who teaches Thai cooking.  It was so so so yummy!

We finished the evening with Krispy Kreme, because we don't get out much.

You scored as The Oak. In Celtic astrology, you're an Oak, the most sacred of trees. The animal symbol that accompanies this tree is the wren. The ancient Druids say Oak people are wise, strong, responsible, self-motivated, optimistic and good leaders in the face of adversity. However, Oaks may be prone to being overly serious, intense, or even pompous.

Goodies!
Last night I had a friend bring me goodies.  It was so nice!

I got strawberries, cherry tomatoes, oranges, plums, sesame seeds, and Earl Grey tea.

I made a deep dish pizza and we ate salad with blackberry jam dressing.  Yummy!

Then, we went to the library and annoyed the librarians.  And I got vegetarian cookbooks, including the Linda McCartney one, which I plan to use to seduce Mike away from meat.  That, along with the chili recipe.

Today we got nine inches of R-30 insulation in our attic, and it cost about $500 less than we thought it would.  What a relief!

Tomorrow I'm making shamrock sugar cookies.

It is snowing tonight and I am happy.

Newmindspace

Aren't they beautiful?  A little piece of Christmastime.

These little LED's called throwies are from a web and public movement called Newmindspace
The throwies are part of an art installation to bring brack the night in cities where light pollution crowds out stars.
Throw them onto magnetic surfaces and they stick and glow!

Newmindspace's goal is to reclaim public places with installation art, free events and parties for all ages.  They just had a public pillow fight in Union Square this last weekend.  They have also hosted bubble battles, subway parties and capture the flag games.  Everything is giant size, with hundreds of participants and even more onlookers.  These people also work to be tidy and reasonable, bringing plastic bags to clean up feathers and asking participants to leave no trace.  The events are in American and Canadian cities and have even caught the attention of NPR.

My favorite critter. . .
For a lighter topic, I introduce you to the Hopi Chipmunk.  I met these little friends when my parents and I went to the Four Corners area.  They were very cute and friendly when people have bread.  I held my empty hand down to one and still manage to attract an inspection.

I love chipmunks!  And all the other critters.
